Conserving water is an environmental responsibility, and I’m excited to share 5 practical and easy ways to save water. Whether you want to invest in water saving appliances or simply want to be more mindful about your usage, there are a number of ways you can make a positive impact this Earth Month.
1) Fix Leaks Household leaks are very common. Thankfully, for the most part it can be an easy fix. This includes tightening seals, replacing worn toilet flappers, and old washers for dripping faucets. By identifying if you have any leaks in your home, you can easily save 10% or more on your water bill.
Did you know? The average household leak can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year. That’s enough to wash close to 10 months’ worth of laundry.
2) Monitor Showers It’s easy to lose track of time while you’re in the shower, which is why I recommend creating a short playlist of songs that’ll help you monitor your time. Having a playlist will help you get into the habit of knowing when it’s time to turn off the water.
Did you know? If everyone in the United States reduced their average shower time by just one minute, it could save 165 billion gallons of water annually plus the energy used to prepare it.
3) Turn Off Tap How often do you (or someone you know) have the tap running while you brush your teeth, scrub the dishes, or lather your hands with soap? It may seem like a simple gesture, but by turning off the tap when it’s not in use, you can save up to two gallons per minute.
4) Invest in Water Saving Products The standard flow rate of a faucet is around 2.2 gallons per minute. By switching to a water saving product, such as a low-flow aerator for your bathroom or kitchen faucet, it can slow the rate of water to 1.5 gallons per minute. You can even find aerators that allow you to increase water flow and pressure for things like showerheads and garden hoses.
Did you know? Water-saving faucets can save you an average of $200 on your water and sewer bills each year. These eco-friendly upgrades can also raise the property value of your home.
5) Laundry Practices Save water and energy the next time you do laundry by switching to cold water, washing full loads, and pre-treating stains. These simple practices will save you money on your monthly bills and keep your clothes looking vibrant and new.
Did you know? An average load of laundry between 4-6 pounds only requires 1.5 – 2 tablespoons of detergent. Using too much detergent will not only coat your machine in residue that you’ll smell later on, but it also negates water-saving efforts because clothes come out stiff which need to be washed and rinsed again.

You can make a positive impact by making small changes to your daily routine. Whether it’s opting for shorter showers, fixing leaky faucets, or investing in water-saving appliances, every effort counts towards conserving water for a more sustainable future. What are some ways you like to save water? I’d love to know.

These are great tips on saving water! I love the idea of creating a playlist for showering, and I do turn off the tap when brushing my teeth, but I need to get in the habit of turning it off when lathering my hands. Also, I always do the laundry with a full load, and I use the eco setting, which washes the clothes at a lower temperature and uses less water! I also have the same setting on the dishwasher!

I love these tips, so practical!! It really is amazing how much extra water can be used when you take a longer shower or leave the faucet running. I noticed an immediate savings when I did a better job of managing both of these.

Generally, I think my husband and I are good at saving water, but he is still someone who leaves taps running (I am trying to get him to stop, haha). This was super useful, and a great reminder to be aware of our water usage.

It’s a common thing habit for so many people! It’s good to be aware of our water usage so we can remind others to turn off the tap. Thank you for reading Molly!

Great tips here. Since moving into our own house, I’ve been more wary about saving water but unfortunately its only been from a selfish viewpoint of saving money. I should have been doing a lot more a lot sooner for environmental reasons as well.
