As the year winds down, many of us are spending our time decluttering, budgeting, and reflecting before the new year arrives. While these are very important tasks, there’s often a few overlooked tasks that don’t end up on a checklist. Here are 5 overlooked tasks to tackle before the new year.
1) Deep Clean Your Fridge and Behind Appliances You’ve probably already checked this task off your list, especially if you’re hosting holiday gatherings, but even if you’ve tidied up before the parties, it’s a good idea to revisit your fridge afterwards.
Toss expired items, wipe things down, and make space for things that you reach for. Don’t forget to clean behind your appliances and dust the top of the fridge. A little extra effort now will ensure you’re starting 2026 with a fresh and organized space.
2) Update Passwords and Boost Account Security According to McAfee, cybersecurity experts recommend that we change our passwords every three months, but how many of us actually follow through? It may be a tedious task, considering how many accounts we have, but securing and reviewing your privacy settings can prevent a major headache down the road.
Review and update your passwords to ensure that they don’t include any personal information that people can easily guess, like your birthday. Set up two-factor authentication if you haven’t already, and keep track of your passwords on a secure software.
3) Pick a Micro-Hobby to Explore in the New Year We are all eager to try new things, but it’s hard to follow through if our hobbies feel impractical or overly ambitious. A micro-hobby is something small, approachable, and fun.
Whether you want to dedicate two nights a week towards learning a new language, spending 15 minutes on a puzzle after dinner, or capturing scenic photos on your winter walks, these small habits will inspire you to get creative and you’ll eventually find a hobby that you can fully pursue.
4) Create a Bingo Card for Your 2026 Goals Goal-setting doesn’t have to be boring or overwhelming. Instead of writing your goals down in a list form, you can try turning it into a bingo card. This makes your intentions visible, playful, and exciting when you get to check off the squares one by one.
You can use websites like Pinterest for visual inspiration and create your free bingo card on Canva. The best part about using an online tool is that you have the option to add or adjust your goals, so you can focus on what’s working and get rid of what’s not.
5) Create a Path for Your Goals As you work on your list of goals for the new year, remember that a goal without a path is just an idea that’s written on paper. Your intentions require a clear and realistic path forward.
For example, if stress relief is a priority for 2026, find a spa or massage therapist that’s within your budget and fits your preferences. By outlining a path to reach your goals, you increase the likelihood of achieving these goals and turning them into tangible changes that will give you results.
From giving your home a thorough cleaning to securing your digital life with password updates, these small but impactful tasks can set a positive tone for 2026. It’ll give you more time and energy to focus on what matters. Are there any overlooked tasks on this list that you want to tackle before the new year? I’d love to know.
