As we say goodbye to August and welcome September, it’s a great time to reflect on what this year has taught us. Similar to a mid-year reset, we can use this time to check in with ourselves to determine what we want to keep, let go of, and make room for before the new season begins.
What do you want to keep?
What were some things that made you feel good this summer? Was it trying a new hobby? Stepping out of your comfort zone? Seeing friends more often? Or having slower weekends?
While it’s true that summer gives you more time and freedom, you can still choose to prioritize what makes you feel good, no matter the season. Start a tradition that excites you such as…
- Planning monthly dinners with friends to stay connected
- Having “Friday treat night” that involves good food and TV
- Trying one new food item each month, such as a pastry, drink, or meal
- Prioritizing shorter nature walks vs. staying inside because of cold weather
What do you want to let go of?
Summer can make it easier to step away from the things that have been taking up more space than they deserve. So, what has this year taught you? Did you change your daily habits? Raise your expectations? Or decide to not over-commit?
Letting go can be a conscious choice you make to stop overthinking, trying to make the most of every weekend, or saying “no” without feeling guilty. As we step into a new season, take a moment to clear some space for the things that actually matter to you. This can look like…
- Saying “no” to protect your time, peace, and boundaries
- Prioritizing things that matter to you, like quiet weekends alone
- Letting go of a goal that no longer aligns with you
- Stop playing small and step out of your comfort zone more often
- Saying “yes” to things that challenge you in a good way
What do you want to make room for?
What are some things you wish you had more time for? Is it joining community classes? Spending time with the people you love? Trying a new hobby? Making room doesn’t mean adding more plans, goals, or responsibilities, it’s about prioritizing things that make you feel good.
As we prepare for fall and winter, it’s easy to fall back into a routine that feels mundane and isolating because we typically spend more time indoors, but it just takes a little bit of planning and effort to call in the things you want. This can include…
- Joining an online book club that keeps you connected with others
- Planning at least one fall/winter activity with friends and or family
- Choose a cozy hobby to keep you engaged when it’s cold out (painting, reading, etc.)
- If it’s cold, do something fun indoors (rec center, spa, cinema, etc.)
As the seasons change, so do we. It’s the perfect time to reflect on what works and what doesn’t. When we start taking responsibility for bringing more joy into our lives, we realize that all it takes is some mindfulness, reflection, and small consistent actions. What are some things you’ve learned this year that you’ll be bringing with you into this new season? I’d love to know.
