Spring is here and it can be tempting to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. But if you’re dealing with some rainy weather, or in my case snow, there are still plenty of productive, free, and educational activities that you can enjoy inside. From learning new skills to taking up a hobby, there are lots of ways to make the most of your time indoors.

1) Plan Your Next Trip
Summer is just a few months away and I know we’re all excited to plan our next getaway. Whether it’s a road trip, a weekend trip, or a full-on vacation, take this time to do some research and get excited about your upcoming travels.
Did you know? According to a study done by VacationRenter, those who took 4 months or longer to plan a trip spent significantly less on accommodations and travel than those planning for less than a month.
Planning ahead gives us the opportunity to discover free activities, save money, and find underrated or lesser-known destinations to explore. It also helps us prepare for any additional travel requirements that may be needed for our destination. Get the most out of your travels this summer and take the stress away by planning ahead.
2) Create a Shopping List
Staying on the topic of saving money and planning ahead, why not use your time indoors to create a shopping list? With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up, along with graduation season and birthdays, it’s the perfect time to see what sales are happening.
Tip! Creating a shopping list allows you to shop within a budget. As the cost of living continues to soar, it’s a great way to track your spending without going over.
Whether you’re looking for greeting cards, gift cards, or electronics, there are many sales happening weekly that you can take advantage of. You won’t find yourself looking or splurging for last minute gifts again!
3) Play Educational Games
If you’re planning on having a no-spend weekend indoors, why not play some educational games online? You can find free games for kids with no ads on Mortgage Calculator. There’s a wide variety of games to choose from, with some of my favorites being money and environmental games.
On last week’s Earth Day post, I mentioned the importance of recycling. I came across a great environmental game called Twin the Bin. It’s an easy game that encourages kids to collect items for recycling. By using the arrows on your keyboard, you can move your character back and forth and follow the instructions on what materials to collect in your recycling bin. The game lasts for 3 minutes and my highest score was 800!
Another game I enjoyed was Cash Back. It’s a game where you have to give the correct change using bills and coins. It reminded me of the cashier games that I used to play when I was younger. It’s a great way for kids to practice basic math skills. You can change the difficulty setting from easy, medium, and hard. You can even challenge the whole family and see who can beat your high score!
4) Create a Functional Space
Is there an area in your home that’s not being utilized or it’s just not functional anymore? Perhaps it’s your office space or a spare room filled with unused furniture. If so, take this time to go through your belongings and create a functional space that works for you.
Did you know? In Canada, there’s a website called Kijiji that allows you to sell or trade household items, electronics, clothing, and more. If you have an old piece of furniture that’s still in good shape, you can make some money off of it and invest that in something new or save it for something else!
It’s the perfect time to go through your belongings and decide whether you’d like to sell them, donate them, or put them in the trash. Not only are you freeing up space in your home, but you can also make some money by taking photos of your things and advertise them online.
5) Catch Up on Reading Challenge
Nothing beats staying at home with a good book, especially when it’s raining outside. If you’re like me, and have been in a reading slump, now’s the perfect time to discover a new book and catch up with your 2023 Reading Challenge. If you’re looking for some suggestions, here are some of my recommendations.
