May long weekend just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning some fun activities for you and your family to enjoy. As the cost of living continues to rise, I know we’re all looking for ways to save some money. Don’t worry – there are plenty of affordable activities that won’t break the bank!
From outdoor adventures to indoor activities, there’s something exciting for everyone to enjoy. Here are 6 ideas to get you started so you can enjoy this special weekend with your family without worrying about overspending.
1) Visit a Cat Café Cat cafés are such a fun and relaxing environment to visit that benefits you and the kitties! The admission fee, which can be anywhere from $10 – $18 CAD depending on the length of your visit, helps to find homes for rescued cats. It’s a great way to experience something new, and you can feel good knowing that your money is going towards a charitable cause. Visit Meow Around to find a café closest to you!
2) Have a Picnic The weather is supposed to be beautiful this long weekend, so pack your favorite snacks and enjoy the afternoon at your local park. Get creative and see what you can create with what you already have in your fridge. Some quick and easy picnic food ideas include fresh fruit, veggies and dip, and sandwiches.
Encourage everyone to bring something, that way you can all share and try something new. As a treat, you can even pick up an iced coffee along the way. Nothing beats soaking up the sunshine, good company, and extra money in your pocket.
3) Leisure Center How does spending the day at an indoor water park sound? There are many recreational facilities that offer a wide range of activities, from an indoor water park, ice skating rink, gym, and even rock climbing. Admission is anywhere from $8 – $18 CAD and bundles under $30 CAD are often available for families of 3 as well.
4) Cycling Let’s get active! If you have a bike or can borrow one from someone you know, you have a whole day of adventures waiting for you. Experience breathtaking views of your city by looking up new bike pathways you can take this long weekend.
If you don’t own a bike, certain bike stores will rent out a bike for $40 CAD a day, or you can choose a shared e-bike, which requires a small fee to be unlocked ($1 – $2) and then charges ($0.30 +) by the minute. Do your research and see which price is more suitable for you. Whether you’re riding along the river or at a nearby park, it’s a great way to experience your city from another location.
5) Beach Day If you live near a beach, take advantage of the nice weather and cool off in the water, sunbathe, make sand castles, or enjoy a peaceful afternoon catching up on your reading. You can even spend the afternoon exploring, admiring the wildlife, and more. The amount of activities to enjoy at the beach are endless and it’s an affordable activity for all to experience.
6) Local Activities If you’re looking for an all-day activity to enjoy with your family, or something to check out after your other plans, visit Eventbrite. Simply type in your city and it’ll list all of the activities you can enjoy. This includes everything from expos, fairs, music, food, and more! It’s an easy way to view everything that’s happening in your city, and you can filter it by free or paid events.
I hope this post gives you and your family some affordable activities to try this May Long Weekend. Remember, having fun doesn’t have to cost a lot of money! What will you be up to? I’m excited to hear your plans. For more posts relating to holidays, visit my tag here.

Such great ideas.
There is a cat cafe based at a local railway station that I always look in when I pass. Mind you we have recently been adopted by a local cat who comes to visit us regularly and is becoming more and more reluctant to leave! At some point we will have to try to find out who his owners are lol!
Her Digital Coffee says
Hahaha you’ve been chosen! We used to have a friendly neighbourhood cat that wouldn’t leave our doorstep too! Thank you for reading Donna!

Great ideas, Winnie. I have never visited a cat cafe but I am sure it’s fun and relaxing. I love picnics but it gets really hot nowadays. The only under $50 fun that I enjoyed was a friends meet up in a park to play badminton in the evening.
Her Digital Coffee says
Badminton in the park sounds like a ton of fun! I’d love to do that this summer. Thank you for reading Ranjana!
