Summer is right around the corner, and on May 27th, we’re celebrating National Sunscreen Day. Sun protection is of the utmost importance, but it can be difficult to decide with so many products on the market. This post will help you narrow down your options to choose the right sunscreen that’ll fit your needs.

What to consider…
1) Mineral or chemical based sunscreen?
2) Is it broad spectrum? (Protects against both UVA and UVB rays)
3) What’s the sun protection factor? (SPF 30+ is recommended)
4) Is it water resistant? If so, for how long?
5) Does it contain added fragrances?
6) What consistency/texture do you prefer?
The difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen
Mineral sunscreen contains ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. It’s suitable for sensitive skin types because it sits on top of the skin to reflect UV rays. They can sometimes leave behind a white cast, so I recommend reading reviews online prior to purchasing. It’s also reef-safe/reef-friendly and won’t cause coral bleaching.
Scientists have also discovered that some of the chemicals found in sunscreen and other personal health products threaten the health of coral reefs. The sunscreen you apply may not stay on your skin. When we swim or shower, sunscreen may wash off and enter our waterways.
noaa, skincare chemicals and marine life.
Chemical sunscreen contains ingredients like oxybenzone or octinoxate. It absorbs UV rays by changing the chemical structure to reduce sun damage. These ingredients can be quite harsh, which may irritate those with sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens do not leave behind a white cast, but contain ingredients that are known to cause coral bleaching.
Sun care brands I recommend
Green Beaver is a Canadian founded company with sustainable practices. Their products are cruelty-free, vegan friendly, 100% recycled, and eco-certified. They have a simple range of mineral sunscreens such as lotions and sprays. A little goes a long way with these products!
Nudestix is a Canadian and female founded beauty company. Their products are also cruelty-free with vegan options. Their daily face veil, blush tints, and lip primers are all reef safe mineral sunscreens with an SPF 30. It’s another way to add sun protection into your skincare routine through makeup.
Did you know? According to American Academy of Dermatology, one ounce of sunscreen is the amount needed to cover exposed areas of the body. That’s enough to fill one shot glass!
La Roche Posay is a well-known dermatologist tested brand for sensitive skin. They offer a wide range of mineral and chemical SPF products to suit your needs. They also have a commitment to respect marine life, which means certain products are eco-tested to ensure their ingredients have no adverse effects.
Aveeno is a great option for those with sensitive skin. Their new range of unscented mineral sunscreen called Protect + Soothe. It uses gentle ingredients and comes in a lotion and stick form. It’s easily accessible and can be found in most grocery and drugstores.
Sun protection is crucial, which is why it’s important to find a product to suit your needs. Whether you’re trying out different textures such as a stick or a spray, it’s important to find a product that you’ll want to use. I hope this post gives you the confidence and knowledge to choose your new sunscreen. What sunscreen do you use? I’d love to hear your picks.
