As the seasons change, it affects our skin. Canadian winters are known to be very dry. There’s nothing worse than experiencing itchy/irritated skin, staticky hair, and chapped lips all season long. Luckily, there are several solutions to make up for the lack of moisture. Whether it’s starting with incorporating healthier habits into our routine or using certain products to assist us along the way, there’s certainly a tip here that will help you combat dry skin this winter.

First, let’s start with…
1) Drinking Water Did you know that colder temperatures increase the risk for dehydration? According to cold weather studies at the University of New Hampshire, we lose a great deal of water from our bodies in the winter due to respiratory fluid loss through breathing.
Another way we lose water is from sweating. This is a common occurrence during the colder months because we’re wearing extra layers of clothing and holding their weight. Since our skin contains 64% of water, staying hydrated throughout the winter can help combat common symptoms such as dry skin, hair, and lips.

2) Using a Humidifier Dry air tends to be the common cause of skin irritation, dry eyes, nosebleeds, and dry coughs. An easy and effective way to add moisture into the air is by using a humidifier. Humidifiers come in different sizes, you can choose one with a smaller tank for your bedroom, or a bigger one to cover larger areas such as your kitchen, living room, or basement. You can find a humidifier at your local pharmacy, supermarket, or conveniently on Amazon.
3) Lowering the Temperature Nothing feels better than taking a piping hot shower in the wintertime, but intense heat can disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier making your skin even drier. Enjoy a warm shower instead and your skin will thank you! After your shower, pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing. Small and subtle changes such as that will help to reduce any further irritation.
Products That Will Help

LEVOIT 3L Humidifier
Three things I look for in a humidifier include 8+ hour run time, auto shut off, and how easy it is to clean. With a stylish design that’s leak proof, a tank that’s dishwasher safe, and runs for 25 hours (3 days) this humidifier checks all of the boxes. The size of this humidifier makes it perfect for both your bedroom or bigger spaces.

Vichy Minéral 89 Serum
Strengthen and hydrate your skin’s moisture barrier with Vichy Mineral 89 hyaluronic acid serum. This non-greasy gel formula is suitable for all skin-types and genders. Made with only 11 ingredients, this lightweight serum is pure, clean, and effective. This is the perfect addition to any winter skincare routine.

Gold Bond Ultimate Moisturizing Skin Therapy
Nothing hydrates quite like Gold Bond, especially during the dry winter months. This hypoallergenic lotion is on the thicker side, but when used sparingly, it absorbs instantly upon contact. It also comes in a small tube, which I keep in my purse. It nourishes my hands after all the hand washing and sanitizing that we do.

Marc Anthony Leave-In Conditioner
Nourish and detangle your hair with Marc Anthony’s Coconut & Shea leave-in conditioner. It keeps your hair soft, shiny, and hydrated no matter the weather conditions. A little bit goes a long way, and what’s not to love about the price tag?

Eucerin Aquaphor Lip Repair
Say goodbye to dry, chapped, and cracked lips. Aquaphor’s Lip Repair offers long-lasting moisture with natural ingredients such as shea butter and jojoba oil. This fragrance-free and hypoallergenic formula is also suitable for sensitive skin.
I hope this post offers some effective solutions to help you combat dry skin this winter. Whether it’s changing daily habits, such as drinking more water or lowering the temperature while showering, or including some new products in your routine, I’m hopeful you’ll find some relief.
