Are packing cubes an essential part of your travel routine? Perhaps you’ve heard of them, but never thought of using them for yourself. I’m here to share my experience and why I believe they would be a great addition for your next vacation.

I was first introduced to packing cubes several years ago and was a bit skeptical. How were these cubes going to help me maximize space? Can’t I roll my clothes to be able the same size without these cubes? But after my first trip with them, I knew I would never go without them again.
What Are Packing Cubes?
Packing cubes are storage bags that come in a variety of different sizes to organize your clothing, undergarments, toiletries, and more while travelling. They’re perfect for suitcases but will work just as well with backpacks too. I prefer ones that come with a mesh design. This makes it easy to identify your belongings and plus it’s breathable. They’re great at helping you save space, are easy to clean, and can be reused time and time again.
How I Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. In a set of 8 packing cubes, I normally end up using 6. This includes the large and medium cube, toiletry bag, laundry bag, shoe bag, and the zippered bag.
For the large packing cube, I include all my outfits. I like to plan them in advanced and incorporate 2-3 additional pieces in case of emergencies. Each item of clothing is then rolled up and the thicker pieces (such as sweaters or jeans) sit at the bottom and lighter items (such as t-shirts and silk tops) sit at the top.
The medium packing cube will include all my sleepwear and intimates. This is extremely helpful because at the end of a long travel day, you can simply reach for the packing cube containing your sleepwear without needing to rummage through your entire suitcase and having to re-organize the next day.
The toiletry bag is a game changer. It comes with a built-in hook, which allows you to hang it on the back of the door. You have easy access to all your products while saving counter space. The mesh and clear design make it easy to see your belongings and it’s easy to clean. Since I use plastic-free haircare I have a lot of space left over, which is why I use the bottom compartment for makeup.
Having a re-usable laundry and shoe bag is such a great idea because it helps to keep your suitcase clean. I no longer have to use plastic bags to separate dirty clothes or shoes. It also makes unpacking a breeze. Rather than sifting through what needs to be washed or what goes where, I simply carry the shoe bag to the closet and the laundry bag to the laundry room.
Lastly, I use the zippered bag for pens and charging cables. If you travel with multiple devices and require different cables, having a separate bag not only protects them but it makes it easier to find. If you need to charge something on the plane or if you plan on getting some work done at your hotel, you can simply grab the zippered bag and rest assured that everything you need is in one place.

I purchased my packing cubes from Amazon several years ago and they’re still in great shape today. The brand YOLOK offers a set of 8 or 10 packing cubes depending on your travel needs. The set of 8 includes 3 cubes, 1 extra large, 1 large, and 1 medium cube. It also includes 5 bags, 1 undergarment, 1 shoe, 1 toiletry, 1 laundry, and 1 zippered bag. The set of 10 includes 1 additional large and medium packing cube.
These cubes also come in 4 different colors, beige, grey, blue, and black. While I adore the beige shade, I prefer darker colors because they are more durable for wear and tear. If you’re going a trip in the near future, I highly recommend trying packing cubes. It’s a one time purchase that will last for many years to come!

I’ve been travelling with packing cubes for over a decade now and can’t say enough good things about them. I’ve even had my suitcase opened at airport security and had compliments on how organized I was! My own cubes are currently flying back from Europe (my sister borrowed them) and she loved them too.
