Are you ready to establish healthier boundaries, have more fulfilling experiences, and reconnect with your authentic self this year? If so, I recommend reading The Joy of Saying No by Natalie Lue. Lue shares her own experiences with people pleasing and repressing her own needs so that others would view her as a good person. One that’s kind, generous, hard-working, and eager to help, but by being her definition of a “good person” she ended up sacrificing her own voice and values, which left her feeling anything but good.

People-pleasing–putting others ahead of ourselves to avoid something negative or to get something we want or need–runs rampant in our society. Saying yes when we should say no leaves us stuck in frustrating patterns. And when we don’t say yes authentically, we say it resentfully, which leads to more problems than if we’d said no in the first place.
goodreads.
I loved everything about this book. Lue created a simple plan to help us identify what type of people pleaser we are and how to firmly stand our ground. We often have trouble saying “no” without feeling the need to follow up with an explanation, letting others down, or putting other’s emotions before our own. Lue helps readers dive into understanding our thought patterns and correcting them in a healthy way.
If you are someone who struggles with saying the word no, I highly recommend reading this book. You’ll discover that saying no isn’t selfish and that it is a form of self-care and healthy boundary setting. Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Horizon for providing me with an advanced reading copy (eARC) in exchange for my honest review. The Joy of Saying No is officially available today!
