The Conversation Guide is a self-help book by clinical counsellor and teacher, J.L. Prevost. Prevost is a passionate communication-skills coach and her goal for The Conversation Guide is to help us communicate effectively. We’ve all experienced what it’s like to walk away from a conversation that’s left us feeling stressed or misunderstood. Rather than continuing this unfavourable cycle, Prevost provides us with the skills, insight, and tools that we can implement right away to be better communicators.

Through my work as a counselor, I’ve been able to boil down almost all miscommunications to either having your reality invalidated or imposing your reality onto someone else.
J.L. Prevost.
Prevost outlines 10 important skills to having a successful conversation. These skills are then broken down and simplified. Prevost provides different examples throughout the book to help serve as guidelines. Whether you’re talking to a stranger, a co-worker, a family member, or your partner, these 10 skills will ensure both parties walk away satisfied. You will no longer feel the need to bite your tongue or sacrifice your boundaries once you’ve finished this book. I especially enjoyed Part II of The Conversation Guide. Prevost lays out different scenarios, which allows us to put our knowledge to the test.
The Conversation Guide offers meaningful advice on how to set and enforce personal boundaries, stop avoiding confrontation, validate yourself and others, establish common goals, and support yourself post-talk. I highly recommend this book because I believe we can always improve when it comes to communication. Thank you to NetGalley and Smith Publicity for providing me with both an eARC and physical copy of The Conversation Guide for review. The Conversation Guide is now available on Amazon and wherever books are sold!

Well, this book is definitely one I need. I’m terrible at validating myself and I avoid confrontation at all costs! I’m also bad at setting boundaries. Thank you for putting this book on my radar!

Fab review! This sounds like an absolute must read, I can be absolutely awful at communicating my feelings – I’m much better at writing things down – so I think this will really help me with that, as well as generally growing my confidence with others too. Thank you so much for sharing, I hope you have an amazing week x

It’s one of those subjects where I would assume I’m a good conversation starter, but I reckon I would read this book and still pick up loads of tips. Its one of the topic that you think you probably wouldn’t learn too much, then end up thinking, ‘actually, I think I’ll try that!’ Thanks for sharing 🙂
