We are less than 2 weeks away from Halloween! Does anyone else feel like this month has been flying by? While I was looking for new titles to read for Halloween, I came across several familiar books. This inspired me to revisit some scary books that I used to read growing up. I got most of these books from the Scholastics Bookfair, remember those?! It was very nostalgic and brought back such wonderful memories. I’d like to share 3 of my most memorable and nostalgic reads for Halloween.

1) Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Series by Alvin Schwartz
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a trilogy of horror short stories for children. These stories usually touched on urban legends and folklore. I grew up reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and was haunted by the black and white illustrations in this book. (Still am to this day!) Even if the stories didn’t get me, the illustrations did. Some of my most memorable stories include The Guests, The Hook, and The Ghost with the Bloody Fingers.
2) Goosebumps Series by R.L. Stine
Goosebumps is a series of horror fiction for children. These stories always had monsters or supernatural elements to them. Along with the books, I also spent a lot of time watching the TV series. The theme song still sends chills down my spine. My favorite and most unforgettable Goosebumps books are The Haunted Mask, Stay Out of The Basement, One Day at HorrorLand, and Say Cheese And Die!
3) In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz
In a Dark, Dark Room is another classic by Alvin Schwartz. This series is illustrated by Dirk Zimmer, and although the style is very different from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the drawings still add a very unsettling touch to compliment the stories. The story “The Green Ribbon” haunted me for years. Even as I write this post, I came across images of that story and it was still very unnerving.
Alvin Schwartz and R.L. Stine were very prominent authors in my childhood. Their stories shaped my imagination and still stick with me to this day. I hope you enjoyed this list. Have you heard of these books/authors before? What are some scary books that you grew up reading? I’d love to hear your picks! For more Halloween related posts, visit my tag here.
