Welcome to The Spooky Scary Book Tag. I came across this Halloween inspired tag on I’m All Booked Up’s blog. It was created by Shelby Masako over on YouTube. If you love scary books as much as I do, and have some that you’d like to share, I encourage you to participate as well. I’d love to read your thoughts and hear your recommendations. The Spooky Scary Book Tag
What Goes Bump in the Night
name a book that legitimately scared you while reading it
Discover Canadian folklore, legends, and more with Barbara Smith’s Canadian Ghost Stories. Read about first hand ghostly encounters and learn more about Canada’s history along the way. Smith is the author of over 15 ghost story books and each tale always leaves me with chills. If you’re from Canada, I can guarantee you’ll find spine-tingling stories about your city.
Jack-o’-Lanterns & Classic Costumes
a book you always reach for during Halloween time
Halloween isn’t complete without Goosebumps. Each year, YTV would air two episodes, “The Haunted Mask” and “One Day at Horrorland.” These are two stories I always revisit during Halloween because it brings back such great childhood memories.
Black Cats & Magic Mirrors
a book you love that is laced with superstition and/or magic
I loved The Harry Potter series growing up. The world of magic was captivating. Each year around this time, I always think of picking up The Philosopher’s Stone. If I can manage to get through my long TBR list for October, then I’ll definitely be re-reading this one.
Witch’s Brew
favorite witch character in any book/series
Small Town, Big Magic is a story with a harmonious blend of friendships, romance, and of course, magic. This book is part of The Witchlore series and I’m looking forward to diving in this Halloween. Emerson Wilde sounds like a strong and resilient character, and I’m already thinking she’ll be my favorite witch.
Ghouls & Ghosts
a book that still haunts you to this day (good or bad)
I believe I’ve mentioned this before, but “The Green Ribbon” story in Alvin Schwartz’s In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories still haunts me to this day. I was either 8 or 9 years old when I read it and I remember having nightmares for months. Dirk Zimmer’s illustrations also played a huge role, as he did a wonderful job creating the haunting imagery.
Haunted Graveyard
you’re alone in a haunted graveyard; you get 1 book to give you comfort. which is it?
Did anyone else grow up loving I SPY books? One book that would give me comfort, especially in a haunted graveyard would be I Spy Spooky Night. Finding hidden objects would be a great distraction.
The Undead
favorite supernatural creatures to read about
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires was my first read with a supernatural creature as an antagonist. I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. While I normally don’t go for books with supernatural creatures, this book has definitely turned me around on that.
In the Dead of Night
pick a book with a black cover
I’ve read mixed reviews about Riley Sager’s Survive the Night, but I can’t resist a scary story about a road trip. Charlie met Josh through the campus ride share board. As they share the long drive home to Ohio, Charlie can’t help but notice strange things about Josh. Is he who he says he is? It becomes a tale of surviving the night.
