Rosie and Chad Lowan dream of starting their own family and growing their careers in New York City, but they’re struggling to make ends meet. Between Chad’s numerous auditions and Rosie pitching her next book, money is tight and they’re starting to worry about what their next steps should be.

When Chad’s late uncle passes, they learn that he’s left his five-million-dollar luxury apartment at the historical Windermere to them. It’s the perfect opportunity for a fresh start, that is until the bodies start to pile up and Rosie and Chad are seemingly always at the center of it all. Is the building to blame? Or its residents?
The New Couple in 5B is by far my favorite thriller of 2024 thus far. The story is loosely inspired by Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby. The pacing of this story is on the slower side, but the author did an incredible job of leading the story in unexpected directions that always left me engaged and curious to uncover more.
Unger did a wonderful job bringing one of the most important characters of the book to life, which was the historical Windermere building. In her author’s note, she mentioned how the Windermere and its descriptions are all based on childhood memory from her late Aunt’s apartment in New York City, which I found to be such a cool fact.
Unger’s ability to craft a compelling and suspenseful narrative while also delivering shocking twists was a joy to read. The story was wrapped up in a satisfying way, with only one loose end that I can think of, but perhaps it’s meant to be left up to your own interpretation. I would happily recommend this book to thriller fans, especially those who love stories with dark historical buildings. Get your copy of The New Couple in 5B on Amazon today.
